ABUJA – The Presidency on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 reacted to the claim by Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, that Nigeria is more divided than ever under the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
It declared that Nigeria had been divided right from the point of its amalgamation in 1914 and not only under the present government.
The position of the Presidency was made known by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, while speaking on a Channels Television programme.
His words: “Nigeria had always been divided right from amalgamation in 1914. Nigeria is an inconvenient amalgamation but we have kept at it and we have worked at it.
“And I tell you that there is no time in the history of this country that the country was not divided. But then, we have kept at it and we are trying to make it work.
“As at 2015 when President Buhari came, Nigeria was terribly divided; divided along ethnic, religious and political lines; divided along language; divided hopelessly and terribly.”
He, however, said the present government had been making efforts to ensure unity, but some played politics with the division.
“When Nigerians come to a decision point that we must live together, we can’t wish anybody away, then we will be working towards being a nation,” he added.
Recall that it was former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, that sparked off the fire of controversy, saying that Nigeria’s division under the present government had increased.
On Tuesday, Soyinka added his voice, saying although he was not a fan of Obasanjo, his declaration that Nigeria had been more divided under Buhari was a correct reading of the current situation in the country
