The Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, Prof. Musa Olomu on Tuesday appealed to the Federal government to deploy more qualified nurses to health facilities in rural communities in order to discourage the services of quack practitioners in the health sector.
The health expert who spoke to Journalists shortly after the opening ceremony of the week-long nurse’s week organised at the FMC, regretted that many patients have fallen victim of the services of untrained nurses in the rural areas.
Olumu said major challenges faced by rural health facilities are as a result of the services of untrained nurses who dominate.
He said “A place where you have quack nurses and the qualified nurses there approved of them there will definitely be havoc. In have works at the rural center before and I know the situation if things. It is therefore important that government employ more qualified nurses.”
The guest lecturer, Professor Prisca Olabisi from the University of Ibadan in the same vein argued that some individual nurses in the health sector are contributing to the training of quack nurses.
She described such nurses as an accidental and disservice to the nursing profession.
Her words “There some individual nurses who are training these quack nurses. If you are nurse and you are contributing to the training of a quack then you are a disservice to yourself as an individual and the profession. Honestly such a nurse is a danger species to the patients.”
