IBADAN, OYO STATE, NIGERIA – In a deliberate move to enhance driving competence, safety awareness, and professional conduct, the Management of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan (FCAIB), has approved a one-day comprehensive re-training programme for its drivers and the Head of the Transport Unit (HTU) at the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI).
According to a release e-signed and made available to StarTrend Int’l Magazine by Wilson Oyekemi, Head of the Media and Communication department of the College, the re-training, which held on January 14, 2026, was approved by the Provost of the institution, Prof. Jonathan J. Atungwu, as part of efforts to equip the College’s driving workforce with current knowledge of modern driving ethics, road safety regulations, and best practices in the operation of government vehicles.
According to the College Management, the programme focused on refreshing participants’ understanding of traffic laws, correct interpretation of road signs, defensive driving techniques, hazard anticipation, and statutory requirements expected of professional drivers.
The training also covered effective record-keeping, routine vehicle inspection procedures, emergency response measures, basic first-aid principles, as well as strategies for managing stress and fatigue, particularly during long-distance journeys.
Adopting a blended learning approach, the programme combined interactive classroom sessions with hands-on practical demonstrations at LASDRI’s driving range facilities.
Participants engaged in simulated exercises on hazard perception and risk assessment, group discussions, case studies, and role-play scenarios addressing ethical dilemmas in professional driving.
Pre- and post-training assessments were conducted to evaluate learning outcomes and measure improvements in competence.
All officially designated drivers of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan, alongside the Head of the Transport Unit, Mr. David Ajekiigbe, participated fully in the exercise.
Each participant was duly registered and is currently awaiting the issuance of LASDRI certification cards upon successful completion of the programme.
Preliminary evaluations revealed notable improvements in participants’ understanding of traffic regulations, safety protocols, and defensive driving skills.
The training also reinforced professional ethics, with strong emphasis on respect for human life, accountability, and strict adherence to road safety rules.
Commending the drivers for their dedication and LASDRI for its professional facilitation, Prof. Atungwu reaffirmed the College’s commitment to continuous professional development and staff welfare.
He noted that sustained investment in capacity building within the Transport Unit would enhance operational integrity, improve safety outcomes, and strengthen overall service delivery.
The FCAIB–LASDRI collaboration is widely regarded as a strategic intervention aimed at promoting safer transportation practices within and beyond the College community, while underscoring the institution’s commitment to excellence and responsible public service.
