Abiodun Inaugurates Chieftaincy Review Committee…Describes Amosun’s Last-Minute Appointments Unprecedented

By Raymond Osho
The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun on Monday June 17, 2019 inaugurated a Chieftaincy Review Committee to re-evaluate the last-minute installation of some monarchs in the State.

The immediate past Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun had, at the tail-end of his administration approved some appointments and upgraded some Baales to Coronet Obas.

But Abiodun during the inauguration of the Chieftaincy Review Committee held at the Governor’s office, Oke- Mosan, Abeokuta, the state capital described the last-minute appointment as unprecedented.

In his speech, the Governor assured that his administration would not allow any form of assault on the traditional institution or its values.

“The setting up of this committee should not be seen as an exercise to score cheap political points or witch-hunt anyone, but rather should be seen as a token of the seriousness our administration will continue to ascribe to the traditional institution”, Abiodun said.

He continued “It will be recalled that the last administration approved the appointments and upgraded some chieftaincy at the tail end of their administration, notable among these appointments was the upgrading of some Baales to Coronet Obas (Kings), which is unprecedented in the history of our traditional institution in the State.

“We will not only accord them (Kings) the due respect, but also ensure that their welfare is well taken care of, in addition, we will ensure that all chieftaincy matters follow due process and extant laws,” the Governor added.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle, pledged that the committee would be fair and just.

He assured that the committee members would go back to educate the people on the committee’s mandate.

The Monarch also thanked the Governor for taking a “bold step” to right the wrongs of the past by setting up the committee, lamenting that traditional institution had been “bastardised and destroyed”.

Other members of the Committee include the Osile of Oke-Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Yinusa Adekoya, Elepe of Epe, Sagamu, Oba Adewale Osiberu, and the Aro of Egbaland, Chief Yinka Kufile and a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Babatunde Oyeti.
