Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State

Ipokia Obaship Tussle: Abiodun Acted In Contempt, Ill-Advised, Iwaye-Dodo Ruling House Alleges

IPOKIA – The Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has been alleged of acting in contempt against the court ruling over the recent installation of Yisa Olaniyan as the Onipokia of Ipokia, acted in contempt of court because he was ill-advised.

Governor Abiodun who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, last Wednesday, installed as the Onipokia of Ipokia.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Iwaye-Dodo Ruling House of Ipokia area of Ogun State, Ruth Okeleye, and made available to the media, the Governor allegedly acted in contempt “because a matter challenging the nomination into the stool was still in court.”

The Ruling House maintained that since the matter was before a competent court of jurisdiction, any action taken by the government was void and a nullity before the law.

One of the elders from Akinlade clan of the ruling house, Alhaji Yahya Akinlade was quoted to have explained that a female child, according to the law, can only be nominated when there’s no qualified male child.

Akinlade was also quoted to have said that the newly installed Onipokia was not a child of neither a male of a female child from the ruling house adding that there were more than enough qualified male child from the ruling house.

While calling for calm amongst the youths in the community especially from the ruling house, the family was also quoted to have bemoaned Governor Dapo Abiodun’s alleged refusal to take notice of their letters to the effect.

The statement read in parts, “Iwaye Dodo Rulling House of Ipokia stated that as far as the families were concerned, the stool remains vacant.”

According to Alhaji Yayah Akinlade, “In as much as there is a pending case on the said stool before a competent court of jurisdiction, any action taken by the government or its representatives is void before the law.”

The elder of the ruling house further stated that “the laws guiding nominations and installation of Obas in Ogun State clearly state that the only case where an individual can be nominated or considered from a female line (Omolobirin) to the throne is where there are no capable male children from male line (Omolokunrin) to the throne.

“In this instance, the said Mr. Yisa Olaniyan is neither from a male nor female descendants of the Iwaye-Adodo Ruling House of Ipokia. In fact, there are prominent and capable sons from the Ruling House to ascend the throne and they submitted letters of expression of interest, but they were not considered.”

However, elders from both families have called on younger members of the family to remain calm. They reassured them that justice shall be pursued to a logical conclusion on this matter.

The family further agreed to explore all means possible within the ambit of the laws of the land to right this wrong.

Alhaji Yayah further stated that “it was unfortunate that despite all the letters of appeal to Prince Dapo Abiodun and proof of litigation on the said matter, the administration still went ahead to perpetrate this spite-induced act.

While calling for calm, Alhaji Yayah informed members of the ruling house that “two things are invaluable in all cases of injustice; Patience and Time and that where both are embraced, the families will have every reason to thank God in the end.”
