Why Lagos Coroner’s Office Delays Verdict On Mohbad’s Death After Eight Months

IKORODU, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA – For over eight months, Nigerians have eagerly awaited news regarding the cause of death of the promising hip-hop artiste Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba also known as Mohbad.

In a surprising turn of events on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Professor Shokunle Shoyemi informed the Lagos Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu that the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s demise remain shrouded in mystery.

He said despite exhaustive efforts, the advanced state of decomposition of the body has thwarted any conclusive autopsy, leaving unanswered questions lingering.

Professor Shoyemi, addressing Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, also noted the absence of updates on the toxicology tests allegedly underway in the United States, as previously mentioned by Lagos State Counsel Mr. O. Akinde during his appearance before Shotobi on November 22, 2023.

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, with his body subsequently exhumed for autopsy on September 21, 2023, approximately eight days after his demise.

Professor Shoyemi clarified that the autopsy was conducted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where photographic evidence was gathered, stressing that, “Notably, Mohbad’s body had not been embalmed and had already begun decomposing before the examination.”

Following the analysis, Professor Shoyemi revealed the presence of puritin, caffeine, paracetamol, and a superficial injury on Mohbad’s left hand, saying despite these findings, the cause of death was deemed “uncertain,” with no specific contributing factors identified.

Dismissing rumours about Mohbad’s neck condition post-mortem, Professor Shoyemi affirmed its intact state and refuted claims of ongoing bleeding.

During cross-examination, Owodeni Ibrahim, a childhood friend of Mohbad, testified about their long-standing relationship characterized by Mohbad’s reputed calmness, intelligence, and diligence.

Ibrahim recounted an incident involving Mohbad and his wife Cynthia, during which tensions escalated in the car en route from Lekki to Ikorodu.

He intervened to pacify Mohbad, who was upset with him for not taking his side. Subsequently, Ibrahim exited the vehicle to clear the road, leaving Mohbad and Cynthia to continue their dispute.

Also, Ibrahim mentioned an altercation in which Mohbad’s face became swollen after an encounter with Sammy Larry during a video shoot with Zlatan Ibile, a situation Mohbad reported to the police.

The Coroner, Magistrate Shotobi, however postponed further proceedings to June 11, 2024.
