BENIN, EDO STATE, NIGERIA – Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and one-time Governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has officially resigned from the ruling party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
His decision to defect comes amid mounting internal tensions within the APC, especially as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Oyegun, who held the position of APC’s first national chairman from 2013 to 2018 and played a pivotal role in the party’s historic 2015 presidential victory, is now backing the growing opposition coalition operating under the ADC banner.
He is now working alongside other key political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal to strengthen the coalition
The ADC has recently attracted several other high-profile politicians, including former Chief of Air Staff Saddique Abubakar and another former Edo State governor, Oserheimen Osunbor.
Oyegun’s move is viewed as a major boost to the ADC’s ambition of becoming a dominant force in the 2027 elections.
According to insider reports, his defection was part of a carefully coordinated strategy led by political leaders advocating for the ADC to serve as the central platform for the new opposition alliance
