Unprecedented Development Sweeps Through Ilaro Under Oba Olugbenle’s Reign

I’ve been tracking His Royal Majesty Oba (Dr) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle MFR, the Olu of Ilaro & Paramount Ruler of Yewaland‘s activities closely, and I can confirm that the pace at which Ilaro is attracting significant development projects, both from the government and private sector, is unparalleled.

A few years back, the Ilaro Muslim Community initiated a remarkable mosque project at the site of the old Central Mosque, nestled in the heart of the ancient town within the Compound of Oba Kosiwun, where the seeds of Islam were first sown.

In March 2024, Oba Olugbenle, along with fellow Anglican faithful, laid the foundation stone for a new Christ Church Cathedral. The Cathedral’s design outshines even that of the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja.

Despite the town’s limited accessibility by road or rail, it is experiencing rapid development.

Ilaro is emerging as a political hub, attracting political heavyweights. It’s no surprise considering that the town hosts the initial debates on the national budget, led by one of its esteemed sons.

Alhaji Hakeem Ibrahim recently inaugurated a large petrol filling station at the Papalanto/Abeokuta junction, opposite the Sayedero market.

The hospitality sector is thriving, with the establishment of a three-star hotel after Ipari-Oda along the old Papa road.

Nightlife is vibrant, with live bands entertaining patrons at various relaxation spots.

The expansion of the Federal Polytechnic, along with pending presidential approval for its conversion to a full-fledged university, is further fueling growth.

Dangote Cement’s presence is reshaping economic activities, leading to the proliferation of retail shops across town.

Oba Olugbenle’s personal efforts to reconnect with his Diaspora subjects are noteworthy and yielding positive results. Meanwhile, the indigenous Yewa people, having embraced Ilaro as the seat of their Paramount Ruler, are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring its prosperity.

The Yewa People Development Council and Yewa Traditional Council are relentless in imbuing the town with the Yewa identity, representing our confederation.
