Tinubu Launches Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, Urges Rulers to Foster Peace

OWERRI, IMO STATE, NIGERIA – July 30, 2024 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday, July 30, 2024 officially inaugurated the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council during a ceremony held in Owerri, Imo State. 

This new council brings together traditional leaders from the South West, South East, and South South regions.

Addressing the gathering through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of the rulers’ support for his administration’s efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.

He particularly urged the traditional rulers to advise their communities against participating in a planned nationwide protest, stressing that the government is committed to enhancing development across the country.

While acknowledging the right to protest, Tinubu expressed concern about demonstrations organized by anonymous groups, which could be susceptible to disruptions by troublemakers.

At the inauguration, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, was appointed Chairman of the new council.

Oba Ogunwusi highlighted that the council’s establishment aims to promote unity and development across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

The council’s co-chairmen include the Obi of Obinugwu, HRH Eze Cletus Illomuanya, and HRM King Jaja of Opobo, Dandeson Douglas Jaja.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, alongside members of the National Assembly.

The Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas, HRM Alayeluwa Oba (Dr) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle MFR, who is also the Olu of Ilaro & Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, and other prominent Obas from Ogun State were also present.
