OWO, ONDO STATE – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, led a chorus of praises for the late former Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN), commending his courageous service to humanity during the funeral service held at the Saint Andrews Cathedral Church in Imola, Owo, Ondo State on Friday, February 23, 2024.
In heartfelt remarks, Tinubu described Akeredolu as a man who passionately dedicated himself to serving others to the best of his abilities, leaving behind a legacy of sacrifice and remarkable impact.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, in his tribute, echoed similar sentiments, lauding Akeredolu as a great leader known for his integrity, commitment to good governance, and adherence to the rule of law.
The gathering, which included dignitaries from across the nation, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Akeredolu, recognizing his significant contributions not only to Ondo State, but to the entire country.
They highlighted his enduring influence on the judiciary, governance, and the lives of countless Nigerians.
As they conveyed their condolences to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Akeredolu’s widow, Dr. Betty Akeredolu, and their family, attendees also extended sympathies to the people of Ondo State, particularly those in Owo, mourning the passing of their distinguished son.
Reflecting on Akeredolu’s life and legacy, they emphasized his unwavering commitment to public service and his profound impact on the growth and development of Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.
The solemn occasion witnessed a gathering of distinguished figures, including current and former governors, members of the National and State Assemblies, religious leaders, legal luminaries, and business leaders, all united in paying their respects to the late governor.
The funeral service, attended by hundreds of mourners, served as a poignant reminder of Akeredolu’s enduring legacy and his profound influence on the lives of those he touched.
Dignitaries from all walks of life that attended the funeral service of the immediate past Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Akeredolu include President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by his Vice, Senator Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume and Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa with his cabinet.
Others are Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Charles Soludo (Anambra), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Godwin Obaseki (Edo) and Ademola Adeleke (Osun), among others.
Also at the funeral were APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Ondo State Deputy Governor, Olayide Adelami, former Governors Segun Mimiko (Ondo), Ibikunle Amosun & Gbenga Daniel (Ogun), Niyi Adebayo and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Chris Ngige (Anambra), Abdul’aziz Yari (Zamfara) former deputy governors, members of the federal and state cabinets, as well as members of the National and State Assemblies, among others.
The funeral service of the late Akeredolu, who was the Chancellor of the Diocese of Owo (Anglican Communion), was also attended by hundreds of Anglican and other denominational bishops and priests, religious leaders, traditional rulers, judges, lawyers, former and present public office holders, politicians and captains of industry.
The service was also attended by the widow and former First Lady of Ondo State, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu and her children, as well as family and friends of the deceased, people of Owo community and Ondo State.
Akeredolu, who was the immediate past Governor of Ondo State, passed on at the age of 67 on December 27, 2023, at a hospital in Germany, where he was receiving treatment.
His death no doubt, marked the end of a chapter in Nigerian governance, leaving behind a void that will be deeply felt by many.
