FCT, ABUJA, NIGERIA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate implementation of a long-anticipated pension increase, along with the rollout of free healthcare services for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The directive followed a briefing from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, at the State House, Abuja.
As part of the new measures, Tinubu approved an average pension increase of ₦32,000 and mandated the introduction of a minimum pension guarantee to provide additional support to the most vulnerable retirees.
Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, the President called for swift action to cushion the impact of rising living costs on Nigeria’s elderly population.
In a move to address long-standing concerns, Tinubu also instructed PenCom to expedite the resolution of pension issues affecting retired police officers, insisting that those who served in uniform deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind.
During the meeting, the PenCom DG provided updates on strategies to shield pension assets from inflation and economic volatility.
She also outlined a new initiative that would enable Nigerians living abroad to contribute to the national pension scheme in foreign currencies.
President Tinubu expressed full support for the reforms and reiterated his administration’s commitment to inclusive welfare policies, particularly for the elderly and economically vulnerable citizens.
