FCT, ABUJA, NIGERIA – In a solemn and historic announcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the death of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to a statement issued and electronically signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at approximately 4:30 p.m., following a prolonged illness.
President Tinubu, in a direct call to former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, expressed his deepest condolences and offered his full support to the family during this difficult time.
In a further mark of respect and national mourning, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late former President’s body back to Nigeria.
President Tinubu also ordered that all national flags be flown at half-staff to honor the memory and legacy of the departed statesman.
Muhammadu Buhari, a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and military history, served twice as the democratically elected President of Nigeria – in 2015 and 2019 – after first leading the country as a military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
His death marked the end of an era, and tributes are already pouring in from across the country and around the world as Nigerians reflect on the life, leadership, and legacy of one of the nation’s most prominent figures.
