Segun Adewale’s influence in juju music continues to echo through the Nigerian music industry, with his legacy as the creator of the Yo Pop genre standing as a powerful testament to his creativity and passion for fusing diverse musical styles.
In 1977, Adewale joined forces with his close friend, Sir Shina Peters, to form the group Sir Shina Adewale and the Superstars International.
Within just three years, the group released nine remarkable recordings, a body of work that marked a defining era in Nigeria’s vibrant music history.
By 1980, the duo parted ways to pursue individual artistic paths. Four years later, Segun Adewale unveiled his signature sound – “Yo Pop” – a dynamic blend of funk, jazz, juju, reggae, and Afrobeat.
This innovative fusion created a refreshing rhythm that captivated audiences and further expanded the boundaries of Nigerian contemporary music.
Born in 1948 in Osogbo into a royal lineage, Segun Adewale was the son of Mr. Adedeji Adewale, a devout Muslim, and Mrs. Christiana Adewale, a Christian.
His early education began at Alafia Institute in Mokola, Ibadan, before he proceeded to St. Peter’s Blessed School in Lagos to complete his primary schooling.
Segun Adewale later attended Premier College, Yaba, and obtained his Higher School Certificate (HSC) from Ahmadiyya College.
Although academically gifted, Adewale’s heart was firmly set on music from an early age. He left the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) during his third year to pursue his passion, a decision that initially met with resistance from his father.
Undeterred, he moved to Lagos and began his musical apprenticeship under Chief S.L. Atolagbe of the Holy Rainbow Band.
Adewale’s turning point came when he met the legendary I.K. Dairo, the father of juju music, who took a keen interest in his talent.
Under Dairo’s mentorship, Adewale refined his skills in composition and musical arrangement – a foundation that would later help him carve out his unique identity as one of Nigeria’s most innovative and enduring musical icons.
