ILARO-YEWA – The residents of Ilaro-Yewa are urgently calling upon Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State to extend immediate assistance regarding the recurring tragedies caused by the collapsing bridges within the Ilaro metropolis.
This appeal follows recent unfortunate incidents that transpired at the Gbogidi bridge, connecting Sawmill and Orita junction, the Odo Fufu bridge near the former Double Crown Foods Ltd., linking Library Junction/Orita to the Federal Polytechnic, and the vital bridge connecting Ilaro to Oke-Ela, all situated in the Ilaro metropolis.
During a visit by the StarTrend Int’l Magazine team to the affected sites, residents shared their concerns, revealing that the Odo Fufu and Gbogidi bridges have been sites of numerous accidents and tragic events for several years. Countless lives have been lost, and vehicles and motorcycles have been damaged due to accidents occurring at these locations.
“It is disheartening and distressing to note that an accident occurred on the Odo Fufu bridge on Friday, July 7, 2023. The next day, another tragedy unfolded as a car descending from Hossanah Hospital towards the bridge veered into the river due to the damaged portion of the bridge.
“Similarly, at the Gbogidi bridge, a motorcyclist lost control and plunged into the river due to the bridge’s deteriorating condition. The bridge connecting Ilaro Township with Oke-Ela, a significant part of our historic town, is on the verge of complete collapse as floodwaters engulf it,” shared the concerned residents.
The residents and students of the Federal Polytechnic passionately appeal to Governor Abiodun to make an urgent visit to these areas in Ilaro. By witnessing the peril firsthand, he will gain a comprehensive understanding of the imminent dangers these bridges pose to the residents of Ilaro-Yewa.
Furthermore, they implore the lawmakers representing the area in both the Federal and State Assemblies to leverage their esteemed positions to safeguard the lives and properties of their constituents.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, an anonymous individual stated, “Through this medium, I appeal to our esteemed Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Deputy Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Lateefat Ajayi, Senator Adeola Olamilekan (Yayi) representing Ogun West, and other concerned citizens to utilize their influential positions promptly.
“Their intervention is crucial to mitigate the occurrence of future tragedies at the identified bridges and protect the well-being of the people of Ilaro Township.”
