ILARO-YEWA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – Residents of Ilaro-Yewa in Ogun State have urgently appealed to the Federal, State, and Local Governments to intervene and address a worsening environmental and public health issue involving the Ilaro Correctional Centre.
According to several inhabitants of the historic town, the facility has been repeatedly discharging raw sewage into the town’s public drainage system, causing significant discomfort and health concerns among the community.
Speaking anonymously with the StarTrend Int’l magazine and online platform crew, some members of the community expressed frustration over the continuous release of untreated waste into the open drains.
They described the situation as a persistent nightmare, with the foul stench emanating from the sewage polluting the environment and triggering various illnesses among residents.
“In our pursuit of a cleaner and healthier Ilaro and its surroundings, we strongly urge the government to take immediate action.
“The officers managing the Ilaro Correctional Centre must be held accountable for the deliberate disposal of sewage into public drains, which not only creates a public nuisance but also poses serious environmental and health hazards”, the residents lamented.
The community further implored all tiers of government – federal, state, and local – to promptly find a lasting solution to the problem.
Despite numerous complaints and direct appeals to the correctional facility’s management, the residents noted, “no permanent remedy has been implemented, and the environmental degradation continues unabated.”
The residents warned that unchecked environmental pollution and public health threats could escalate into an epidemic, emphasizing the urgency for government intervention.
“Environmental pollution is a serious public health risk, and the government must act swiftly to protect the welfare of Ilaro-Yewa citizens before this issue spirals into a major health crisis”, they concluded.
