Prof. Nimi Wariboko Denies Statement Attributed To Him By Abuja Newspaper, Demands Immediate Retraction

BOSTON, MA, USA – Professor of Social Ethics and Director of the African Studies Center at Boston University, Prof. Nimi Wariboko (Walter G. Muelder Chair), has firmly denied a report published on November 2, 2025, by Abuja-based newspaper “The North Journals”, which he says “falsely attributed a statement to me.”

In a statement electronically signed and released to the media, Prof. Wariboko addressed an article titled, “Between Faith and Furrow: How the ‘Christian Genocide’ Narrative in Nigeria Overshadows Deeper Conflicts.” The publication claimed he had said: “Labeling the conflict as genocide against Christians not only simplifies reality, it risks internationalising the crisis along religious lines. It could justify interventions that Nigeria neither wants nor needs.”

Prof. Wariboko described the attribution as completely untrue.

“I did not make this statement to “The North Journals” or to any of its reporters or editors. I have not expressed such views to any media outlet or individual, particularly since President Trump declared Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern,”, he clarified.

Reiterating his position, he stated, “This quote is entirely fabricated.”

Prof. Wariboko has therefore called on “The North Journals” to “immediately retract the false statement and issue a correction”, stressing that responsible journalism must uphold accuracy and integrity – especially when reporting on issues involving conflict, religion, and national security.
