ABEOKUTA/LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Governments of Ogun and Lagos States have officially confirmed that British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
In a joint statement e-signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information to the Ogun State Government, and Gbenga Omo, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, authorities revealed that the vehicle conveying a team of four rammed onto a stationary truck, resulting in two fatalities.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident and pray that Almighty God grants them the strength to bear this difficult loss”, the statement read.
Anthony Joshua and another surviving passenger were immediately transported to a specialized medical facility in Lagos, where doctors confirmed that both individuals are stable and not in need of emergency medical intervention.
A full medical team has been assigned to monitor them closely.
“Anthony Joshua is conscious and has been in communication with his family”, the statement noted.
Both state governments assured the public that they are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the affected individuals receive the highest standard of medical care. Investigations into the cause of the accident are already underway.
The public was also urged to respect the privacy of Anthony Joshua and his family during this period of recovery.
