Neglected Maintenance: Concerns Arise Over Weeds, Bushes On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Ministry of Works, Highway Division, has been alerted to the issue of overgrown weeds and thick bushes encroaching upon the inner edge and median of the ongoing construction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Commuters using this road have expressed their dismay at the apparent lack of a maintenance culture within government agencies, which has led to the deteriorating condition of the expressway.

They have noted a concerning pattern where government allocates funds for projects, retains a significant portion, spends the rest gradually over an extended period, revises the project cost upwards, and eventually inaugurates the completion with great fanfare.

However, subsequent maintenance is often neglected, causing infrastructure to deteriorate or decay.

This wasteful approach to resource utilization is seen as unsustainable, even if Nigeria were the wealthiest country on Earth. It raises questions about the efficiency of resource allocation when numerous other areas require urgent attention.

The concerned citizens are urging a change in mindset and action. They question the wisdom of ignoring seemingly simple issues until they escalate into significant problems.

They also call on Nigerians not to remain silent when they encounter such situations but to bring them to the attention of the relevant authorities.
