NAFDAC Issues Warning About Contaminated Sprite Drink, Urges Nigerians To Exercise Caution

ABUJA – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public to a batch of contaminated Sprite 50cl glass bottles currently circulating in Nigeria.

In an official statement released by NAFDAC’s management and shared with the media, it was revealed that the discovery of the tainted product came after a consumer complaint was received and subsequently investigated by the agency’s post-marketing surveillance unit.

According to the statement, the affected batch (BN: AZ6 22:32) of Sprite 50cl glass bottles, manufactured on April 23, 2018 (MFD: 180423), was found to be contaminated with particles. Over five crates from this batch were identified as problematic.

As a precautionary measure, NAFDAC has taken samples of the contaminated product for laboratory analysis at their facility. The agency has also instructed all zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and recall the implicated batch from the market.

The Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), the manufacturer of Sprite, has been directed by NAFDAC to initiate a recall of the affected batch and cooperate with the agency for proper monitoring.

NAFDAC has urged individuals in possession of the contaminated Sprite 50cl glass bottles to surrender their stock at the nearest NAFDAC office.

The agency has also advised distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and refrain from the consumption, sale, or distribution of any suspicious or unwholesome products.

It is recommended that the public remains vigilant and follows NAFDAC’s guidelines to ensure the safety of their health and well-being.
