My Dad Disowned Us A Couple Of Times, But Made Sure We Understood Value Of Silver Spoon In Our Mouths – Seyi Awolowo

LAGOS, NIGERIA – Former Big Brother Naija star and grandson of the iconic Obafemi Awolowo, Seyi Awolowo, recently opened up about his upbringing and the complexities of his family’s legacy.

Seyi, in a candid conversation on the Just Chude podcast with Chude Jideonwo, shared deeply personal insights into his relationship with his late father, Oluwole Awolowo, fondly called “Unbreakable”, and the challenges of bearing the Awolowo name.

Despite being born into privilege, Seyi emphasized that his father was adamant about teaching him and his siblings the value of their advantages.

“We were born with a silver spoon, but my dad made sure that we understood the value of the silver that was in our mouths,” Seyi remarked.

However, Seyi also revealed the more turbulent aspects of their familial dynamics. He recounted instances where his father disowned him and his siblings, often without clear reasons.

“My dad disowned me a couple of times – not just me but a number of us. He would write us letters to let us know that we were cut off. We don’t even know the reasons why he disowned us at times,” Seyi shared.

Reflecting on the burden of the Awolowo legacy, Seyi expressed ambivalence. While acknowledging the prestige associated with the name, he admitted to struggling with the weight of expectations.

“I do not wish I had the Awolowo name. Being in the shadows of my granddad has made me see that even if I was hungry for something, if I did not have something to ginger me, I wouldn’t put in the effort,” Seyi reflected.

Despite the complexities, Seyi credited his father with shaping his outlook on life, saying, “My dad is late, but my mum is still very much alive. My dad was a very unbreakable character in my life; his influence in my life put me in a mindset that I cannot take life for granted and I need to apply myself.”

Seyi Awolowo’s journey highlights not only the privileges of his lineage but also the challenges and lessons learned along the way, shaped by familial expectations and personal growth.
