The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed strong disapproval of the distressing incident in which a police team ran a vehicle over a civilian in Ekpoma, Edo State, on Thursday, June 29, 2023.
The incident, captured in a viral video, shows the victim’s hands and legs bound as he was forced to lie on the ground.
Local residents were engaged in a confrontation with the officers when the officer behind the wheel of the vehicle drove and ran over the victim.
The officer ceased driving upon the repeated shouts from the residents, alerting him that the victim was under the car.
In response to the incident, the spokesperson of the police command, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement stating that the Acting IGP has instructed the implicated police officers, who have been detained in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, July 3, 2023, for further actions to be taken.
Adejobi emphasized that the public, particularly the residents of Ekpoma, should remain calm, as the current leadership of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) will not tolerate such unprofessional and illegal conduct.
