..As Vice President Kashim Shettima Decorates New Acting IGP

ABUJA, TUESDAY, JUNE 20, 2023 – The newly decorated Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun has said that he feels like a Tiger ready to chase away all the criminals in Nigeria.
Egbetokun who stated this during an interview with State House Correspondents shortly after his decoration by Vice President Kashim Shettima, expressed his feelings about his new responsibility, stating that he is looking forward to taking over on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, by 11 am.
The decoration came 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the appointment of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Egbetokun, as the replacement for the immediate past Inspector General Of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba.
His words, “I will tell you that right now, I feel like a Tiger inside of me ready to chase away all the criminals in Nigeria. And some other time, I feel like a lion in me ready to devour all the internal enemies of Nigeria.”.
It would be recalled that Vice President Kashim Shettima had earlier decorated the newly-appointed IGP with his new rank at a short ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
VP Shettima was assisted by Egbetokun’s spouse at the event which was witnessed by senior government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume; Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; and the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba.
Recall, the new IGP replaces Baba, who was appointed as the IGP by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021.
Also, the immediate past Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, had in an acting capacity, decorated Alkali Baba with his new rank of IGP in 2021.
Born on September 4, 1964 in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, the acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun got enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on March 3, 1990, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
He had his initial Cadet training in the Nigeria Police Academy, and has attended many other courses within and outside the Police Force.
He has worked in several Police commands and formations across the country and held command positions at various times in his career spanning 35 years.
As a Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1999, he was appointed the Chief Security Officer to the Governor of Lagos State. In that capacity, he coordinated the security of the entire state while reporting to the governor.
He has served as the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos, Squadron Commander, Mopol 5, Benin, Benin City, Officer-in-Charge, Anti-Fraud Unit, FCT Command, Abuja, Chief Superintendent of Police, Administration, Lagos State Command Head Quarters, Ikeja, Area Commander, Osogbo, Osun State Command and Area Commander, Gusau, Zamfara State Command among several others.
As Deputy Commandant, Nigeria Police College, Ikeja Lagos, he was appointed acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos State in 2019.
He was CP Servicom, FHQ Abuja, CP Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD), CP Kwara State Command and CP (Admin) Medical, Falomo Lagos. He was also AIG Zone 7, Lokoja from where he got promoted to DIG. Until his new appointment, he was DIG Operations.
The vibrant acting IGP studied Bsc (Ed) Mathematics at the University of Lagos and holds the Masters of Science degree in Engineering Analysis, Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University and MBA degree from Lagos state University.
IGP Kayode Egbetokun is not only a Police officer, but a Mathematician. He graduated from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, with Bachelor of Science degree (BSC) in Mathematics in June 1987 and lectured Mathematics briefly at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, before his enlistment into the Police Force.
His other academic qualifications include MSC Engineering Analysis, also from the University of Lagos, Akoka, 1996, PGD in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University, Abraka, 2000, and an MBA from Lagos State University, Ojo, 2004.
Those that know him attest to the fact that he is a seasoned disciplined and incorruptible officer, firmly committed to discharging his duties with vigour, honour and integrity.
Egbetokun believes in strong Police institution, as an indispensable tool for safety and sustainable economic growth in the country.
