“I Avoid Anglican Churches – They Always Ask for Something” – Nyesom Wike

…Says, “If I Choose to Go To A Mosque, I Will”

FCT, ABUJA, NIGERIA – Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike on Sunday, July 6, 2025, attended a thanksgiving service at St. James Anglican Church in Abuja to express his gratitude to God for the progress made on key projects and reforms within the FCT.

However, during his remarks – captured in a video shared by Channels TV – Wike humorously admitted that he typically avoids Anglican churches because they tend to make requests whenever he visits.

“I run away from Anglican churches,” he said with a laugh. “There’s no way they’ll not ask for something from you. They never let you go just like that.”

Speaking candidly to the congregation, Wike added, “I’m not a member of your church. Don’t tie me. Any day I want to go to a mosque, I will go.”

The statement, which was also featured in a video posted by TVC, sparked widespread reaction on social media, drawing both support and criticism.

Known for his outspoken nature, Wike used the moment to underscore his right to religious freedom, emphasizing that his political position does not limit his ability to worship where he chooses.

He also rebuked attempts by critics to label or box him into any particular religious identity.

“I cannot be confined,” he said, signaling his resistance to religious stereotyping and defending his personal spiritual autonomy.
