SAUDI ARABIA – Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al Saud, long dubbed the “Sleeping Prince,” has reportedly regained consciousness after spending two decades in a coma following a tragic car accident.

In 2005, while studying at a military college in London, Prince Al-Waleed sustained a traumatic brain injury during a car crash. Although he was critically injured, reports indicate that his friends who were in the car with him escaped unharmed.

Following the accident, the prince suffered a brain haemorrhage that led to a deep coma. Since then, he has relied on life support, including a ventilator and a feeding tube, while receiving around-the-clock care at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.

In 2015, medical professionals advised Prince Al-Waleed’s father, Prince Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, to consider ending life support. However, he refused, clinging to hope that his son would eventually wake up. Prince Khalid was steadfast in his belief, saying, “If God had wanted him to die in the accident, he would have been in his grave now.”

The prince’s mother, Reema, also shared how she always felt her son’s spirit close, even through the years of unconsciousness. The family remained emotionally connected and committed to his care, offering occasional updates on his condition.

Signs of potential responsiveness began to emerge in recent years. In 2019, a video clip showed Prince Al-Waleed slightly moving his head in reaction to a relative’s voice. In 2020, another clip surfaced where he raised his hand when greeted by his aunt, Princess Noura bint Talal. These moments gave the family renewed hope.

Medical professionals have weighed in on his condition. Neurologist Dr. Al-Mansoori noted that while spontaneous movement in long-term coma patients is uncommon, such signs may suggest that some neural pathways remain active. However, he cautioned that a full return to normalcy is unlikely.

In a remarkable and emotional turn of events, it was reported yesterday that Prince Al-Waleed is now fully awake and communicating. A viral video circulating online shows the once-silent prince engaging with those around him — a scene many had long given up hope of witnessing.
