UROMI, ESAN NORTH-EAST LG EDO STATE, NIGERIA – A tragic incident occurred in the Idumoza Community of Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, as a hotel under construction collapsed, killing its owner, Harrison Isesere.
The building reportedly gave way on Friday, August 1, 2025, while Isesere was inside.
Over 20 workers present at the site narrowly escaped with their lives.
Rescue efforts continued through the weekend, and Isesere’s body was eventually recovered from the rubble on the morning of Sunday, August 3, 2025.
Local residents revealed that concerns had been raised earlier about the quality of materials used in the construction.
According to one of the neighbours, Andrew Inegbebor, the late owner had been warned about the use of substandard materials and inadequate structural practices.
“The owner was told he was using low-quality material. He used 12mm rods instead of 16mm for the pillars. There was no base basket at the pillars. Look at the result”, Inegbebor said.
He further added, “There was no engineer on site. The deceased supervised the construction himself. Unfortunately, the structure collapsed and killed him, though some workers managed to escape.”
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
