IBADAN – Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has finally addressed the reasons behind the dismissal of Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi, popularly known as Auxiliary, as the Chairman of the disciplinary committee of the Park Management System (PMS). The governor emphasized that a state cannot have two parallel governments.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving Service to mark his Omituntun 2.0 Celebration at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan, on Sunday, June 4, 2023, Governor Makinde shed light on the matter.
It can be recalled that on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, the governor, through his former Chief of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi, announced the dissolution of the PMS, which was previously headed by Auxiliary, a former leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The Oyo State Police Command had also declared Auxiliary wanted in connection with various criminal activities, including attempted murder, causing grievous harm, arms dealing, murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping in the Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa areas of the state.
Governor Makinde explained that he took decisive action by dissolving the PMS because meaningful activities cannot thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity.
However, during the Thanksgiving Service, he reassured the public that necessary reforms would be implemented in the PMS to address the troublemakers.
He stated, “Before the last election, it wasn’t that there were no thugs, but we called them and explained the kind of new Oyo State we desired. We wanted them to refrain from fighting amongst themselves, and we aimed to prevent frequent clashes and conflicts.
“We told them not to engage in any form of violence. If we were re-elected, we promised to unite them so that everyone could receive their fair share. It was important for both the people and the government to operate in an atmosphere of peace”, the governor added.
Besides, he noted that one individual expressed unwillingness to work with others, prompting him to assert that only one government can operate in the state.
Governor Makinde acknowledged that his achievements in his first term were only made possible by the grace of God.
He further emphasized that the primary focus of Omituntun 2.0 is improving the welfare of the people.
The governor assured that his administration would do everything necessary to facilitate a seamless upgrade and provide a conducive environment for compliance by the populace.
In another development, the Oyo State government has officially appointed Alhaji Tomiwa Omolewa as the chairman of the Management Committee for the Park Management System (PMS), with Alhaji Kasali Ajisafe Lawal serving as the Secretary.
Also, the government has issued an order to reopen the parks, which were previously closed following the dissolution of the PMS Disciplinary Committee led by Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi.
The newly announced management team, revealed by the government on Sunday, June 4, 2023 comprises members from all major factions within the transport union.
This decision stems from the state government’s objective of maximizing the available opportunities within the PMS. To gather insights on system improvement, a town hall meeting was organized where stakeholders provided suggestions.
One of the suggestions put forward during the meeting was to ensure that the PMS leadership includes members from all transport union factions, aiming to foster peace in the state. The constitution of the new team reflects this recommendation.
Apart from the chairman and secretary, other members of the management team include Alhaji Tajudeen Jimoh (Deputy Chairman), Kamardeen Idowu (Treasurer), Tirimisiyu Olowoposi (Financial Secretary), Abass Amolese (Organizing Secretary), and Alhaji Hamidu Mustapha Were (Auditor).
Additionally, Alhaji Abideen Ejiogbe serves as the First Vice Chairman, Ganiyu Mojeed as the First Trustee, Alhaji Musa Alubankudi as the Second Trustee, Alhaji Rahman Akinsola Tokyo as the Second Auditor, and Alhaji Wasiu Emiola as the Public Relations Officer.
Following the announcement, the newly appointed PMS chairman, Tomiwa Omolewa, expressed his gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for entrusting him with the position.
He also took the opportunity to assure the people of Oyo State and the government that their work attitude would undergo a positive change.
“I extend my thanks to Governor Seyi Makinde for considering me suitable for this position. I want to assure the people of Oyo State and the government that we will approach our work with a different mindset.
“I promise that the public will observe a significant improvement in our operations as we assume our roles”, he stated.
