Football Icon High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde Passes On at 88

IBADAN, OYO STATE, NIGERIA – The death has been announced of Nigerian football icon, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who died on Monday, March 9, 2026 at the age of 88 years.

According to a statement e-signed on behalf of the family and made available to the media by Mrs. Bolade Adesuyi, the family expressed gratitude to God for a life well spent.

“With hearts filled with gratitude to God for a life well spent, the family announces the passing of renowned football icon and community leader, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde,” the statement read.

The family also expressed profound gratitude to God for granting him a fulfilled life and for the enduring impact he made on the nation and the global football community.

They prayed that his soul would rest perfectly in the bosom of the Lord Jesus Christ, adding in their heartfelt tribute – “Good night till we meet to part no more.”

Mrs. Bolade Adesuyi further stated that details of the final funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later time.

High Chief Onigbinde, a distinguished son of Modakeke in Osun State and a respected High Chief in his community, left behind a legacy that spans family life, community service, and remarkable contributions to Nigerian football.

Widely celebrated as the first indigenous Nigerian coach of the Nigeria national football team, High Chief Onigbinde carved a unique place in the history of the sport through his dedication, professionalism, and passion for developing football in Nigeria.

His influence went beyond the football field, as he remained a mentor, leader, and inspiration to generations of players and sports enthusiasts both in Nigeria and across the world.

Beyond his achievements in football, he was a devoted father, loving husband, caring grandfather and great-grandfather, a dependable brother, and a loyal friend to many.

Those who knew him remember a man of integrity, humility, and deep faith.
