ILARO-YEWA – Dr. Mukail Aremu Akinde FCA ACTI, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government area of Ogun State, has issued a warning to staff and students residing off-campus to stay away from flood-prone areas in the town.
Akinde conveyed this caution while conducting an on-the-spot assessment of areas severely affected by flooding after heavy downpours on Friday, July 7, and Saturday, July 8, 2023.
Expressing condolences to those who suffered losses of valuable goods and properties during the unfortunate incident, the Rector urged students to refrain from renting houses in flood-prone areas, such as Riverside.
He advised those currently residing in such areas to relocate to safer places.
Akinde emphasized that this advice is crucial considering the anticipated heavy rainfall in the upcoming months, as predicted by relevant government agencies including the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
To address the immediate needs of affected students, Dr. Akinde personally made a donation. He called on relevant government agencies responsible for disaster relief at the federal and state levels to assist affected students and staff of the institution.
He also appealed to other compassionate groups and individuals within and outside the town to provide much-needed support to the victims of last Friday’s flood in Ilaro-Yewa.
In order to prevent future occurrences of similar incidents, the Rector praised previous efforts by the state government to open up stream and gorge channels in the town.
He called for the reactivation of such projects and the reconstruction of roads and bridges in the erosion and flood-prone areas of the town that have been severely damaged.
