FG Explains Why U.S. Forces Were Allowed To Conduct Air Strikes Against Terrorists In Nigeria

… To Protect Civilian Lives, Strengthen National Unity

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that recent U.S. military air strikes on terrorist targets in the North West region were approved as part of an ongoing security collaboration aimed at combating violent extremism.

In a statement issued early Friday, December 26, 2025 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government described the operation as “precision air strikes targeting terrorist positions,” carried out under a structured framework of security cooperation and intelligence sharing with the United States.

According to the Ministry, the partnership involved strategic coordination, intelligence exchange, and operational support – all conducted in line with international law, respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, and shared commitments to regional and global security.

The Federal Government emphasized that the primary objective of the intervention is to protect civilian lives, strengthen national unity, and defend the rights and dignity of all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

“Terrorist violence in any form, whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities, remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security”, the statement said, noting that this reality led to the recent precision strikes in the North West.

Reaffirming its stance, the Ministry stated that Nigeria will continue working with international partners to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt their funding and logistics, and prevent cross-border threats while boosting Nigeria’s own security and intelligence capabilities.

The Ministry concluded that engagements with partners will continue through established diplomatic and security channels, with the public being kept informed via official communication platforms.
