Federal Polytechnic Ilaro’s 21st Convocation: Records 795 Distinction As Rector Akinde Commends Graduands, Unveils Innovations (+photos)

ILARO-YEWA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – During the 21st Convocation of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro-Yewa, Ogun State, held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, a total of 10,447 graduands were honoured, among whom 795 achieved distinction grades.

Dr. Mukhail Akinde, the Rector of the institution, lauded the achievements of the graduating class, emphasizing their excellence in both character and learning.

Highlighting the outstanding performance of the graduates, Dr. Akinde revealed that Sanusi Kehinde Salimot and Sotuminu Elizabeth Temitope emerged as the top students, each graduating with a remarkable 3.89 CGPA from the HND programme.

Similarly, Adeleke Asisat Ayobami stood out as the best student from the ND programme, achieving a 3.88 CGPA in Science Laboratory Technology.

For the 2022/2023 graduating class, Salaudeen Azeezat Arike and Ogungbayi Alimot Abisola led the HND programme, both graduating with an impressive 3.90 CGPA.

Awojoola Samuel Adeyemi emerged as the top student in the ND programme, attaining a 3.90 CGPA in Business Administration and Management.

In his address, Dr. Akinde urged the graduands to recognize the significant investments made in them by their parents, the institution, and the nation.

His words, “Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to announce to you the Convocation Statistics. A total number of 10,477 graduands have been found worthy both in character and learning for the award of National Diplomas and Higher National Diplomas of our great Polytechnic by the Academic Board.

“For the 2021/2022 graduating class, the total number of male graduates produced from the HND programme is 426, while the total number of female graduates produced from the same programme is 663. Altogether, a total number of 179 students made distinction grade in the HND programme, with the best students – Sanusi Kehinde Salimot, a female student of the Department of Accountancy, and Sotuminu Elizabeth Temitope, a female student of the Sclence Laboratory Technology Department, graduating with 3.89 aplece.

“In addition, 868 male students successfuly graduated from the institution’s ND programme, while a total of 887 female students graduated from the same programme. Altogether, a total of 164 students made distinction grade. In the ND programme, with the best student – Adeleke Asisat Ayobami, a female student of the Department of Sclence Laboratory Technology, graduating with a 3.88 CGPA. A total number of 553 male students graduated from the ND (Part-time programme), while a total number of 722 female students graduated from the same programme.

“With respect to the 2022/2023 graduating class, the total number of male graduates produced from the HND programme is 943, while the total number of female graduates produced from the same programme is 1373. Altogether, a total number of 175 students made distinction grade in the HND programme, with the best students – Salaudeen Azeezat Arike of the Office Technology Management, a female, and Ogungbayi Alimot Abisola of the Science Laboratory Technology (Bio-Chemistry option), a female, graduating, with 3.90 apiece.

“In addition, 1,042 male students successfully graduated from the Institution’s ND programme, while a total of 1187 students graduated from the same programme. Altogether, a total number of 277 students made distinction grade in the ND programme, with the best student – Awojoola, Samuel Adeyeml of the Department of Business Adminlstration and Management, a male, graduating with a 3.90 CGPA. A total number of 805 male students graduated from the ND (Part-time programme), while a total number of 1,008 female students graduated from the same programme”.

He encouraged them to leverage the skills and capabilities acquired during their education to contribute meaningfully to society.

The Rector also enjoined the graduands to bear it in mind that “their parents, institution, and nation have invested a lot in them”, adding that the time has come for them to “begin to unleash” their potential and put into use the 21th century training skills and capabilities they have acquired.

Dr. Akinde also highlighted the innovative achievements of the institution, including the development of a Biometric Device and an Electric Tri-cycle, supported by TETFund.

His words, “The biometric device was designed and assembled by the students and lecturers of Electrical & Electric Engineering, Computer Engineering & Computer Science of this Polytechnic.

“It will interest you to note that the biometric devices should have been imported at an exorbitant price of N750,800/device excluding Withholding Tax of w0% 7.5% VAT.’

The Biometric Device, designed and assembled by students and lecturers of the Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering & Computer Science departments, showcased the institution’s commitment to technological advancement and self-reliance.

During the convocation ceremony, Alimot Abisola Ogungbayi, representing the distinction-earned graduands, expressed gratitude for the guidance and support provided by the institution’s faculty. She pledged to uphold the values instilled in them and to serve as exemplary ambassadors of the institution.

“Today, we are departing as accomplished graduates. We have reaped the benefits of the tireless efforts of our esteemed lecturers which guidance and expertise have ignited our thirst for knowledge and shaped us for what we are today”, she posited.

The ceremony’s highlight was the awarding of the institution’s fellowship to Dr. Adedoyin Tokunboh Ogunfemi, an esteemed alumnus recognized for his outstanding contributions to the institution, the nation, and humanity.

Dr. Akinde commended Dr. Ogunfemi’s dedication and service, acknowledging his invaluable support and commitment to the institution’s growth and development.

“The recipient, Dr. Adedoyin Tokunboh Ogunfeml, is a great and illustrious alumnus of the Federal Polytechnic, llaro-Yewa who has distingulshed himself through his commendable service to our great institution, country, and humanity.

“I am using this opportunity to once again appreciate him, not just for his impactful endowments at the Polytechnic, but for his rare dedication, passion, and incurable Identification with our brand”, Dr. Akinde enthused.

The convocation ceremony concluded with the decoration of Dr. Adedoyin Tokunboh Ogunfemi as a Fellow of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro-Yewa, symbolizing his enduring connection and exemplary service to the institution.
