Electoral Manipulation: A Threat To Democracy – Jonathan

…Says, Leaders Who Fail Should Be Voted Out

ACCRA, GHANA – Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that unless stakeholders work together to reform Africa’s electoral systems, democracy across the continent risks collapse.

Speaking at the Democracy Dialogue organised by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana, the former president emphasised that electoral manipulation remains a major threat to the survival of democracy.

Jonathan stressed that any leader who failed to deliver on promises would be voted out of office if genuine, transparent elections were conducted.

He identified manipulation of electoral processes as one of the gravest dangers facing Africa’s democratic journey.

“Democracy in the African continent is going through a period of strain and risk of collapse unless stakeholders come together to rethink and reform it. Electoral manipulation remains one of the biggest threats in Africa”, Jonathan warned.

The former president highlighted that Africans yearn for fundamental freedoms, fair elections, equitable representation, quality education, security, jobs, and dignity.

He cautioned that when leaders fail to meet these basic expectations, citizens become disillusioned.

The Democracy Dialogue also featured former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese, and other notable figures.

Collectively, speakers underscored that democracy in Africa must go beyond elections to include accountability, service, and discipline.
