ABUJA, FCT, NIGERIA – A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has issued a summons commanding the appearance of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Arise TV Media Group, and Fisayo Soyombo within 30 days as defendants in a lawsuit filed by Chief Ibrahim Dende Egungbohun, a Customs Licensed Agent from Ogun State.

In the writ of summons numbered G/2286/24 and dated May 3, 2024, Chief Egungbohun, also known as IBD Dende, initiated legal action against the trio for alleged character assassination through numerous tweets on their respective handles and a broadcast on Arise Television’s special programme – “The Morning Show”, aired on February 24, 2024.

Egungbohun seeks an order from the FCT Court for the retraction of the alleged libelous statements and demands a public apology from each defendant.

He specified that the apology should be published by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism and Arise TV on their respective handles (@fisayosoyombo and @fijnigeria) and on FIJ’s blog (fij.ng).

Also, he requested the apology to be published or broadcasted by all defendants on “The Morning Show.”

Egungbohun also seeks a court order to restrain the defendants from making any further defamatory publications, including the use of innuendos, on their handles, websites, TV programmes, or any other publication medium.

The plaintiff also demanded for general damages amounting to N5,000,000,000.00 (Five Billion Naira) and an additional sum of N10,000,000,000.00 (Ten Million Naira) as the cost of instituting the suit.
