LAGOS, NIGERIA – During a gathering organized by the Nigerian Defense Headquarters in Lagos, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo, bestowed traditional Yoruba attire upon Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, and his wife, Meghan Markle.
Also, Oba Akanbi christened Meghan with the Yoruba name ‘Adetokunbo’.
The announcement took place as part of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s three-day visit to Nigeria, where they engaged in various activities, including discussions with military personnel and veterans.
In his address, Oba Akanbi commended General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff, for his efforts in uplifting the Nigerian Army and honoring its veterans.
He expressed optimism that Meghan’s ancestral ties to Nigeria, revealed in a 2022 interview where she disclosed being “43 per cent Nigerian” through genealogy testing, would strengthen the country’s bid to host the Invictus Games in 2027.
Oba Akanbi remarked, “I am delighted to participate in this event and commend the leadership of the Nigerian Army. The visit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, facilitated by the Defense Headquarters, is significant in bolstering security cooperation and advancing Nigeria’s prospects for hosting the 2027 Invictus Games. I am pleased to bestow upon Meghan the Yoruba name ‘Adetokunbo’, symbolizing the return of royalty from afar.”
