LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has clarified reports surrounding its ongoing reorganisation, stressing that the exercise is driven by the need to protect the facility, ensure safety, and sustain operational efficiency.
In a statement, the management explained: “This exercise is not arbitrary. It has become necessary to safeguard the refinery from repeated acts of sabotage that have raised safety concerns and affected operational efficiency.”
The company noted that intermittent sabotage in different units of the refinery posed serious risks to human life and safety, hence the decision was taken in the best interest of the facility and its stakeholders.
“We remain vigilant to our internal systems and vulnerabilities to ensure the long-term stability of this strategic national asset. It is imperative to protect the refinery for the benefit of Nigerians, our partners across Africa, and the thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on it”, the statement added.
Management further disclosed that over 3,000 Nigerians are currently employed at the refinery, while only a very small number of staff were affected by the restructuring. Recruitment of Nigerian talent, it added, is ongoing through graduate trainee programmes and experienced hire opportunities.
Reaffirming its respect for workers’ rights, the refinery maintained that it upholds globally accepted labour principles, including the right of workers to freely decide whether or not to join a union.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, according to the statement, exists to serve Nigerians, strengthen Africa’s energy independence, and create sustainable jobs.
“We will continue to work in partnership with our employees, regulators, and stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of safety, transparency, and accountability”, management assured.
