Cross River State Police Command Clarifies Details Of Ogoja Motor Accident, Warns Against Spreading Falsehoods

CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA – The Cross River State Police Command has provided clarification regarding a lone serious motor accident that occurred on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at about 10:45 am along Abakpa/Igoli Road in Ogoja Local Government Area.

According to preliminary intelligence reports, as stated in a release e-signed and made available to StarTrend Int’l magazine and online platform by SP Ugbo Irene, ANIPR, Police Public Relations Officer, for the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State, the incident involved a BMW vehicle with registration number AKD 900 GD. The vehicle was driven by one Bassey Precious ‘m’, accompanied by one Caleb Fidelis Okem ‘m’.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred during an attempt to resist arrest by armed men suspected to be operatives of yet-to-be-identified individuals, who were traveling in a white Toyota Hiace bus.

Regrettably, following the incident, one Joseph Otonko ‘m’, aged 21 years and a resident of No. 36 Old Court Road, Abakpa, Ogoja LGA, released a defamatory and misleading video on the TikTok platform.

The video falsely alleged misconduct and involvement of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, specifically officers of the Ogoja Division, in the motor accident.

The Command emphasized that the contents of the viral video were false, inciteful, and capable of misleading the public, as well as undermining public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

Following the release of the video, the Command immediately invited Joseph Otonko for interrogation and clarification. After a thorough engagement, Otonko retracted his earlier allegations and released a second viral video, publicly exonerating the Nigeria Police Force personnel from any wrongdoing related to the accident.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olusegun Eyitayo Omosanyin, PSC(+), fdc, expressed appreciation to members of the public for their continued cooperation.

He urged all citizens to remain law-abiding, constructive, and responsible in their expressions.

The CP further warned that spreading falsehoods and inciting content against security agencies is unlawful and counterproductive to the peace and progress of society.

Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to transparency, professionalism, and effective service delivery, CP Omosanyin encouraged citizens to seek proper clarification and engage through legitimate channels before drawing conclusions or making public statements..
