MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM – Saturday, October 11, 2025 – In a heartfelt address marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the Chairman of the Nigerian Community Greater Manchester (NCGM), Alhaji Abiola Kumoye, made a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish a Nigerian Consulate in Greater Manchester to better serve Nigerians living in the northern regions of the United Kingdom.
Speaking before a distinguished audience that included representatives of the Nigerian High Commission in London, community elders, mayors, councilors, and invited guests from Nigeria and across the UK, Alhaji Kumoye expressed profound appreciation to all who graced the occasion.
He began by thanking His Excellency, Ambassador Mohammad Maidugu, the Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria to the United Kingdom, for supporting the celebration and sending a representative to the event.
“We are gathered here today not only to celebrate our shared heritage but also to reflect on our progress as a people and envision a brighter, more prosperous future for Nigerians in Greater Manchester”, he said.
Representing over 250,000 Nigerians in Greater Manchester, Kumoye reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering unity, inclusivity, and progress within the diaspora community.
He, however, lamented the challenges faced by Nigerians who travel long distances to London for consular matters, describing it as “a burden that is better experienced than explained.”
“I want to appeal to President Tinubu on the urgent need for a consulate here in Manchester. Many Nigerians in the North, Scotland, and surrounding regions spend heavily to access services that could easily be provided here. The Nigerian government could utilize the Nigeria House in Manchester for this purpose”, he suggested.
Alhaji Kumoye extended warm greetings to the President, First Lady, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President, Governors, and all Nigerians at home and abroad on the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
