ABUJA, FCT, NIGERIA – Former Chairman of the Special Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property under President Muhammadu Buhari, Okoi Obono-Obla, has made startling revelations regarding the administration’s anticorruption efforts.
Speaking on the Mic On Podcast, Obono-Obla accused the government of ineffectively combating corruption, asserting that significant sums recovered were ultimately returned to the perpetrators.
He cited specific instances of recovered assets, such as over 80 armored Mercedes Benz cars seized in Abuja, which were allegedly returned to their owner despite lacking customs duties and tax payments.
Obono-Obla also detailed efforts to investigate a Senator implicated in the Panama Papers for offshore properties worth £200 million, which he claims were stalled without action from higher authorities, including the Attorney General.
These allegations underscore challenges faced within the administration in tackling corruption effectively, reflecting broader criticisms of Nigeria’s anticorruption efforts under President Buhari’s leadership.
