Bianca Ojukwu, the wife of the late Odumegwu Ojukwu, has shared an incident that continues to stay with her whenever she looks at her wedding cake photograph.
This story centers around the unfortunate experience she had with a cake maker during her wedding preparations.
In a recent marriage anniversary celebration, Bianca disclosed, “I was informed by a close friend during my wedding preparations about a talented wedding cake maker in Enugu. Although my friend didn’t personally know the cake maker, she offered to accompany me to her shop.
“On that day, I decided to leave my own Mercedes and join my friend in her modest Volkswagen Beetle. We arrived at the cake maker’s establishment, and she, unaware of my identity, cast a disdainful look at our car and seemed unimpressed. I requested her to create my wedding cake, and she began offering various excuses.”
She continued, “Firstly, she claimed her cakes were expensive, priced at 25,000 naira back then, and doubted my ability to afford it. She suggested other cake places for ‘important personalities’ and mentioned names like a Union bank manager and a boutique owner as her ‘dignitary’ clients. Despite her doubts, I reassured her of my willingness to pay.
“The cake maker then inquired about the wedding location (Abuja) and insisted I cover her air travel expenses to deliver the cake. She also brought up hotel accommodation, which I assured her I would manage. Throughout this interaction, my friend kept urging me to reveal my identity, but I chose not to. I found it intriguing how this lady, who wasn’t affluent herself, exhibited such snobbery.
“To summarize, even after all these discussions, she wasn’t convinced of my ability to afford her services. She asked for my phone number and said she would contact me later.”
She went on to explain, “I took up an offer from a Canadian chef at the Nicon Hilton Abuja, who was a skilled baker. He generously created my multi-tiered wedding cake for free to promote the hotel’s services. A week before the wedding, the Enugu cake maker recognized me from the media coverage of the upcoming event and came to my house, regretful and seeking forgiveness.
“On that unforgettable day in November 1994, our grand wedding took place at the Nicon Noga Hilton, Abuja, marking the first wedding event at the venue. The Hilton management graciously provided the magnificent multi-tiered cake seen in the picture.”
She recalled. “The Enugu cake maker missed out on showcasing her skills and products on a national stage. This significant promotion bolstered Hilton’s event hosting business. Sadly, I heard that the cake maker’s business faced challenges and eventually closed down.”
Bianca concluded, “The moral of this true story is to avoid judging based on appearances. Every person is equal before God, if not society. We mustn’t interact with others solely based on their material possessions or attire. Opportunities are lost when we hold prejudiced views. And when one door closes, another, often greater, opens by Divine grace.
“Happy Wedding Anniversary to me and my late husband, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu!”
