KANO, KANO STATE, NIGERIA – Security agents in Kano State have defied Governor Abba Yusuf’s order to arrest the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.
On Saturday, May 25, 2024, the police and other security agencies stated they would not comply with the governor’s directive, citing a court order.
Governor Yusuf, through his Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Tofa, had accused Bayero of “creating tension in the state” and ordered his arrest.
According to the governor, Bayero was allegedly smuggled into Kano city in an attempt to reclaim the palace two days after his deposition.
However, Commissioner of Police Mohammed Usain Gumel, addressing the media at the Command Headquarters, emphasized that the police and other security agencies are bound by a Federal High Court order.
The court order, issued on May 23, 2024, restrains the State Government from enforcing the new law that reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.
“The Police Command is expressly obeying the Court Order with SUIT No. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024…, alongside all Law Enforcement agents in the State,” Gumel stated.
He assured the public that the police, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, are fully prepared to ensure peace and security in Kano.
Gumel called on the people of Kano to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, noting that the court would address the matter on June 3, 2024. He warned that anyone found attempting to disrupt the peace would be dealt with according to the law.
He reminded the public that the law is clear and that any attempt to jeopardize the state’s security would be met with severe consequences. The police and other security agencies have put measures in place to prevent any breakdown of law and order, ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
Commissioner Gumel thanked the citizens for their understanding, prayers, and support, reiterating the security agencies’ commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state.
