Army Reacts As Officer Dies After Being Allegedly Set Ablaze By Wife Just Five Months Into Marriage

UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA – The Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade has described the death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion, as “a tragic case of domestic violence.”

The officer died after his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom State, just five months after their wedding.

According to a statement signed by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lawal Muhammad, preliminary investigations revealed that the altercation between the couple stemmed from a family crisis that escalated violently, leading to property damage and the fire that ultimately claimed the officer’s life.

“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families,” the statement read.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna. The Nigerian Army will continue to advocate healthy relationships, address domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities.”

The Army appealed for calm as military police investigations continue to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on September 22, 2025, after a heated argument between the couple.

The late Haruna, who was also a medical doctor, was reportedly doused with petrol and set on fire by his wife, identified as Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna.

He sustained severe burns and was initially stabilised at the Military Reference Section within the barracks before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite intensive medical care.

Lieutenant Samson Haruna and his wife reportedly got married in April 2025, making the tragedy even more devastating for colleagues, friends, and family members.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the family of the deceased officer and addressing issues of domestic violence within the military community.
