UYO, AKWA-IBOM STATE, NIGERIA – The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspected kidnappers in its ongoing effort to make the state safe from criminal activities. The suspects were apprehended while wearing military uniforms.
According to a release signed and made available by ASP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer for the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, the arrests were made following a distress call received on May 24, 2024, at approximately 23:00 hours.
The call reported a kidnapping incident at Utang Street by Gibbs Street, Uyo.
The Command’s Anti-Robbery Squad promptly responded to the distress call and mobilized to the scene. Four suspects—Abdulkarem Yusuf, Yusuf Waziri, Inbinabo Sunny Iboroma, and Abdulrahman Abbas—were apprehended during the operation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had previously kidnapped Abraham Ekpe at Ring Road 3, opposite the cemetery.
They were in the process of attempting to kidnap Ekpe’s friend, “Richie,” when the police intervened. The suspects had planned to take both victims to Odukpani Local Government Area in Cross River State.
The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of five million naira from Ekpe, who was unable to pay, leading them to also target his friend.
Both victims were successfully rescued by the police and have been reunited with their families.
The police recovered one red Honda Accord car with registration number BJ 615 ABC, one handcuff, and one dagger from the suspects.
The arrested individuals will be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CP Waheed Ayilara, reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to making Akwa Ibom State uninhabitable for criminals.
He urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities or movements to the police to ensure continued safety and security in the state.
