Aisha Buhari Affirms Marriage To Late Former President

Aisha Buhari, widow of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has refuted claims that she and the late president were separated before his death. She emphasized that their marriage remained intact until his final moments.

The clarification follows reports by Farooq Kperogi, a U.S.-based Nigerian professor, who alleged that Aisha had dropped the Buhari surname and reverted to her maiden name, Halilu – implying a separation before Buhari’s death.

In response, Aisha – through her former aide, Alhaji Sani Zorro – insisted that her marital status was never in doubt. Zorro categorically dismissed the allegations, affirming that the former First Lady was married to President Buhari until his passing.

On Sunday, July 20, Kperogi publicly apologized, calling his Facebook post “one of the worst and cruelest lapses of judgment” in his life.

He admitted that although his source was considered reliable, the information was never meant for public release.

“I absolutely should have foreseen the profoundly painful consequences… I am truly sorry”, he wrote, acknowledging Aisha Buhari’s right to tell her own story regarding her marriage.

The episode has sparked intense reactions online, igniting conversations about journalistic responsibility, individual privacy, and the enduring legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in the UK in 2024 after a long illness.
