DAURA, KATSINA STATE, NIGERIA – Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was buried on Tuesday, July 16, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, and the solemn ceremony was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and a host of local and international dignitaries.
Earlier in the day, President Buhari’s remains were flown back from London and received at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina. From there, his body was transported in a dignified hour-long procession to Daura, with crowds lining the streets to bid farewell to the former leader.
Leading the high-level delegation was President Bola Tinubu. He was joined by Guinea-Bissau President Umaru Sissoco Embaló, Niger Republic Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, former Nigerien President Issoufou Mahamadou, Nigeria’s former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, state governors, and prominent business leaders.
Upon arrival at the late President’s residence, a brief lying-in-state was conducted. This was followed by funeral prayers (Salatul Janazah), led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, Imam of the Central Mosque in Daura.
The final interment took place at 5:50 p.m. in the courtyard of his Daura residence – a place where he was known to frequently sit and welcome guests. The burial was witnessed by President Tinubu, members of the Buhari family, and close associates.
The funeral featured full military honours, including a reveille and a 21-gun salute – symbolic tributes traditionally reserved for national heroes.
The event marked a poignant farewell to a man who served as both military Head of State and two-term civilian President.
A week-long schedule of remembrance events is planned to follow the funeral. It will begin with an official condolence visit by the Presidential Committee to President Buhari’s family later on Tuesday.
In an emotional moment captured in a viral video, Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State was seen in tears during the burial.
He wept as the former president’s body was lowered into the grave, mourning the loss deeply.
In his tribute, Governor Radda described Buhari as “an embodiment of the common man’s aspirations.”
He called the late president a “father figure” whose footsteps he had tried to follow. He praised Buhari’s humility and lifelong connection to his roots.
“From his early days as a military leader to his transformative presidency, President Buhari never forgot his roots. He remained connected to the soil of Katsina and the hearts of its people. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void”, Radda stated.
“As we mourn this irreparable loss, we must also celebrate a life well-lived in service to humanity. President Buhari’s legacy of putting people first will continue to inspire generations of leaders”, Radda added.
The burial marked the end of an era in Nigeria’s history. The atmosphere was filled with deep reverence and reflection, as mourners gathered to honour the former military leader and civilian president.
A strong security presence was maintained throughout Daura as large crowds came to pay their final respects to the late statesman, ensuring order and safety during the high-profile funeral.
President Muhammadu Buhari died in a London clinic on the evening of Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
He led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, and his final resting place in Daura symbolically closes a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political *journey.
