Oyo State Gets Acting Governor As Makinde Embarks On One-Month Leave

IBADAN, OYO STATE, NIGERIA – The Oyo State House of Assembly has formally acknowledged a letter from Governor Seyi Makinde, notifying lawmakers of his intention to proceed on a one-month leave beginning Thursday, August 29, 2025, and ending Monday, September 29, 2025.

The letter, read during the House’s plenary session on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, and presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, was submitted in compliance with Section 190 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution.

This section mandates that a governor must notify the legislature before proceeding on leave.

In the letter, Governor Makinde stated that Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, would assume responsibilities as Acting Governor throughout the duration of his absence.

“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September 2025”, the letter read in part.

Speaker Ogundoyin expressed the Assembly’s full support for the temporary transition and reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to upholding constitutional procedures and ensuring uninterrupted governance.

Barrister Bayo Lawal is expected to take full charge of state affairs beginning August 29, 2025, until Governor Makinde’s return on September 29.

Meanwhile, the House is scheduled to reconvene for its next plenary session on September 16, 2025.
