ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced the demise of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the highly respected Awujale of Ijebuland.
In a statement personally signed and released to the media, Governor Abiodun expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s death, saying, “It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland. Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a towering legacy that has profoundly impacted Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria at large.”
The Governor also noted the tragic coincidence of Oba Adetona’s death occurring on the same day as that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital.
“It is indeed a day of double grief”, he added.
Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was widely regarded as a transformative traditional ruler. Over his six-decade reign, he stood as a symbol of unity, cultural pride, and visionary leadership.
“He was a remarkable royal father who championed education, healthcare, and economic development. His reign ushered in unparalleled progress in Ijebuland, turning it into a beacon of growth and stability within Ogun State.”
Governor Abiodun highlighted the monarch’s significant contributions, including the modernization of traditional festivals like the Ojude Oba, which gained global recognition under his reign.
“His commitment to preserving our cultural heritage while embracing progress set Ijebuland apart as a model of socio-economic development,” the Governor said.
As the people of Ogun State mourn the loss, Governor Abiodun urged reflection on the enduring values and legacy of Oba Adetona.
“His wisdom, humility, and steadfast devotion to his people will remain a guiding light for generations to come. May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may we uphold the principles he lived by throughout his glorious reign.”
