Akwa Ibom Commissioner Resigns From Cabinet Over Governor’s Defection To APC

UYO, AKWA-IBOM STATE, NIGERIA – Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, Dr. Ini Ememobong, has resigned in protest of Governor Umo Eno’s decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr. Ememobong announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the governor, dated June 6, 2025. In the letter, he cited “personal conviction” as the reason for refusing to follow Governor Eno into the new party.

The resignation letter was delivered shortly after Governor Eno formally declared his defection to the APC at a high-profile event held in Government House, Uyo, on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Governor Eno had, about two weeks earlier, directed all commissioners and political appointees in his administration to either join him in defecting to the APC or resign their positions.

The event marking the governor’s defection was attended by prominent APC figures from across the country, including the Governors of Cross River, Delta, Edo, and Lagos States, as well as Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, wife of the Senate President.

During a press conference in Uyo on Friday, Governor Eno stated: “Having completed the rounds of my consultations as your servant, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

The governor emphasized that his decision was not a sign of surrender, saying: “We are not joining the APC from a position of weakness; we are joining the APC from a position of strength.”

Governor Eno clarified that his decision to defect was intended to align fully with the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu.

His defection comes just six weeks after Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori also left the PDP for the APC.
