… Athletes, Residents Assured Of Safety
ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA – The Ogun State Government has assured both athletes participating in the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta and residents of the state that there is no cause for alarm following a diesel tanker explosion that occurred near the Alake Sports Complex.
The explosion, which took place on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, raised initial concerns due to its proximity to one of the key festival venues. However, authorities have moved swiftly to calm fears and ensure public confidence in the safety measures in place.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, it was confirmed that although there was a fire outbreak resulting from the diesel tanker incident, the blaze was quickly extinguished, and no damage was recorded.
Akinmade commended the promptness and proactiveness of the fire service in the state and the vigilance of officials at the complex, assuring participants at the sports festival of total safety.
“The incident this afternoon involving a gas tanker close to one of our facilities for the National Sports Festival was very unfortunate. We thank God that the fire was immediately put out to avert any casualties.
“To this end, we want to assure all our athletes and the people of the state of safety and that there is no cause for alarm as the situation is under absolute control”, the statement read.
