PORT-HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA – Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has addressed mounting political tensions with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, during the commissioning of the newly completed Bori Zonal Hospital on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Fubara used the occasion to emphasize his dedication to governance despite institutional challenges.
Governor Fubara disclosed ongoing efforts to comply with a recent Supreme Court ruling requiring the presentation of the state budget to the legislature.
However, he alleged that his attempts were obstructed, stating, “I was denied access to the Assembly despite prior communication.”
Referring to messages sent to lawmakers via WhatsApp, he added, “I did everything to resolve this today. Nothing lasts forever – even the greatest power will end. What matters is how we use it.”
Fubara’s comments appeared to target Nyesom Wike, now serving as Federal Capital Territory Minister, amid their prolonged rivalry over control of Rivers State’s political machinery.
Condemning the abuse of power, Fubara framed his adherence to legal procedures as a demonstration of strength rather than submission. “Abusing power leads to chaos. I choose restraint because there is life after power,” he declared.
His words underscored a commitment to respecting institutional processes despite political interference, reinforcing his resolve to govern effectively.
The commissioning of the Bori Zonal Hospital marked a significant achievement under Fubara’s “Rivers First” agenda.
The N15 billion project, abandoned by previous administrations, has been completed as a modern, three-story healthcare facility featuring, ICU units, surgical theaters, mental health services and staff quarters for 24 personnel.
“This hospital will decongest our teaching hospitals and save lives in Ogoni communities,” Fubara stated, instructing for the immediate operationalization of the facility.
According to Health Commissioner Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the state has witnessed a 60% surge in healthcare visits since 2022. This improvement is attributed to Fubara’s investments in security, manpower, and infrastructure.
His administration has made significant progress in healthcare through:
- Security: Reducing kidnappings that previously targeted medical staff in rural areas.
- Workforce Expansion: Recruiting 2,000 healthcare workers to address chronic shortages.
- Welfare Enhancements: Implementing timely promotions, salary reviews, and providing staff housing to boost morale.
“Despite the state’s N483.3 billion debt profiles inherited from Wike’s administration, Fubara remains committed to prioritizing healthcare, education, and agriculture. The completion of the Bori Zonal Hospital aligns with this vision.”
During the event, a viral birthday artwork gifted to Fubara became a focal point. The artist, who attended the commissioning, described the piece as representing resilience, with each nail symbolizing “a pain endured.”
Moved by the gesture, Fubara declared, “I will not let this artwork – or your struggles – be in vain. Our pains have purpose.”
His words further cemented his promise to persevere through the state’s ongoing challenges.
