Bolaji Akinyemi Warns Tinubu: “Avoid Confrontation With Trump”

…Says, “Trump’s Aggressive Policies Could Have Global Repercussions”

FCT, ABUJA, NIGERIA – Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bolaji Akinyemi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to avoid direct confrontation with newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump.

Akinyemi criticized Trump’s inaugural speech, describing it as uninspiring and aggressive, with threats of hostile policies like reclaiming the Panama Canal and engaging in tariff wars.

Akinyemi predicted that Trump’s approach to governance would lead to global turbulence, warning of a potentially chaotic four years under his administration.

He noted that Nigeria is unlikely to be a priority for Trump and advised against expecting significant engagement or support from the U.S. during his tenure.

Speaking further, Akinyemi cautioned President Tinubu against antagonizing Trump, stating, “There is nothing a bully likes better than taking on people who are not strong enough to resist him.”

He cited an African proverb to emphasize the dangers of challenging a bully without adequate strength, warning that it could lead to unnecessary suffering.

Akinyemi advised Tinubu to adopt a diplomatic approach even if Trump’s actions appear to undermine Nigeria’s interests.

He suggested that Tinubu find alternative ways to address such issues without engaging in direct confrontation, stating, “There are ways in which you could address his reaction without confrontation.”
