Day NAFDAC Discovers Counterfeit Alcohol Factory On Lagos Island

LAGOS, NIGERIA – In a major crackdown on illicit activities, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal production site for counterfeit alcoholic beverages in Lagos.

The discovery highlights the agency’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and maintain consumer safety.

The discovery was made on Monday, December 2, 2024, following a tip-off from concerned citizens. Acting promptly on the complaint, NAFDAC operatives launched an investigation that led to a shop on Offin Road in the Balogun area of Lagos Island.

The premises, deceptively ordinary, were repurposed as a hub for the production and packaging of fake alcoholic drinks.

“Assorted bottles of the offending products were destroyed on-site, while packaging materials, empty bottles, and repackaged drinks were confiscated,” the statement reads.

“The estimated value of the destroyed and seized items exceeds N30 million.

“NAFDAC has initiated further investigations and advises consumers to buy alcoholic beverages only from reputable vendors and to report any suspicious products and activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.”

Last month, NAFDAC said its operatives dismantled an illegal alcohol packaging operation at Article Market in the Abule-Osun area of Lagos.

The agency said over 50,000 counterfeit branded labels and packaging materials for fake alcoholic beverages, valued at approximately N2 billion, were confiscated.

NAFDAC also said it uncovered a warehouse in Oke-Afa, Okota, Lagos, stocked with unregistered and expired supermarket items.

The agency reiterated its determination to continue clamping down on similar illegal activities to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of regulated products.

This operation underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to combating counterfeit goods, particularly those that pose serious risks to public health.
